2013 Region 8 Conference
North American Saxophone Alliance
Salem State Saxophone Day
March 15-16, 2013
Salem State University
Location: Salem State University is located in historic Salem, MA, 16 miles north of Boston. Salem is easily accessible by major highways. Its proximity to Boston and NH make air travel easy with bus and rail service from Boston to Salem.
Facilities: The conference will take place in the Salem State Central Campus building. This building houses the music department and recital hall.
Two classrooms are available for lectures, masterclasses. etc. Each classroom features a smart podium, which includes LCD projection, a document camera, DVD, CD, VHS, cassette tape, and an LP turntable, all operated from a touch screen at the presenter’s fingertips. A video interface is also provided for use with laptop computers.
Recital Hall: This is a 164 seat recital hall designed for the performance of chamber and solo works.
Rehearsal Facility: Across the street from the music department is our large ensemble rehearsal space. This facility is also equipped with the same equipment as our classrooms with the added benefit of a larger space. This can be utilized for presentations, workshops or rehearsals.
In addition to the classrooms, and recital hall, there are several practice rooms available for rehearsal and warm-up use. If necessary, an alternate performance facility is located next door that we can use if a large number of guests are expected for evening concerts.
Proposals: Due to the size of our recital facility and the lack of a large ensemble at the school, we will not be accepting performance proposals for solos with large ensemble accompaniment; (concertos, etc.) Performance proposals for chamber, electronic, solo and piano accompaniment are encouraged.
Saxophone Day: I have for the past three years organized the Salem State Saxophone Day which is an all day workshop for middle and high school saxophonists. The participants rehearse in a large ensemble on Saturday morning, and we normally have two guest artists who work with the students in the afternoon, which culminates in a concert for their parents. I would like to include the Saxophone Day as part of the conference as it presents a unique opportunity for the participants to hear and participate in many presentations and performances. The Saxophone Day participants will have their large ensemble rehearsal in our rehearsal facility across the street and then move over to the central campus building for the afternoon to attend the conference offerings, with their concert at 5pm in the recital hall open to their parents and any interested conference attendees. Their registration fee will include the $10 under 18 NASA membership.
Parking: The central campus has a large parking lot. The school is on spring break during this time, so parking will be free and readily available.
Hotels: Salem is home to two hotels in the downtown area and also several Inns. Conference rates will be pursued at the Hawthorne Hotel and the Salem Waterfront Hotel as well as the Peabody Holiday Inn. Other hotels are within short driving distance.
Transportation: Taxis are readily accessible from the hotels to the campus. If the number of conference attendees warrants it, we may look into providing a shuttle in mornings and evenings to the downtown Salem hotels.
Dining: There are several dining options within walking distance of the campus and the downtown area is littered with various cuisine options, many of which have late night live music available, particularly on the weekends. Both hotels have full service restaurants available.
